Date: 10 Nov 2011 |
| |
09 November 2011
The plight of military working dogs has improved dramatically since the days of the Vietnam war when many were abandoned after their heroic efforts saved an estimated 10 000 lives.
In many countries today’s working dogs are treated as soldiers and are not only airlifted home after having done duty for their country but are also treated for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Denel’s subsidiary MECHEM, is the only UN-approved demining company in Africa and uses working dogs extensively in war zones all over the world from Iraq and Afghanistan to countries all over Africa. The company, which is based in Pretoria, has cleared 14 million square metres of landmines on the continent and saved thousands of lives.

Defence technology spins-off into daily lives |
Date: 5 Oct 2011 |
| |
Think internet; think defence technology!
If you think the use of defence technology is limited to those who wield weapons; think again. Did you know that the internet, used daily by almost every inhabitant in the developed world started out as the military’s Arpanet? The handy navigational GPS in our cars stemmed from defence technology, and our cell phones rely on satellite technology which drives voice and data communication. Robotics is applied to great effect in manufacturing and orthopaedics. And even missile technology has been applied to the sporting world of cricket.
